Love the story and cover. Found the hardback book to be a bit of a let down compared to HOTE which had a nice hardcover, not just the dust jacket.

A very special book, one of those extremely rare books that changes your life. Thankfully it's also one of the very rare books that I can re-read, and one of the books that I read when I'm really struggling with life.

At the Feet of the Sun has made me more emotional than anything else I have ever read. It's taught me so much about the nature of love, what it actually means to different people and how it can be expressed in so many different ways. Victoria Goddard is so wise in her ability to describe all the good that comes out of different types of love and how platonic relationships between people are as important and valid as sexual relationships. The story is again a delight, and also a real change from The Hands of the Emperor with the second two thirds seeing Kip and Fitzroy off on a huge adventure and meeting their ancestors and then coming back absolutely changed and absolutely closer together and making a home, community and the beginnings of a life together as fanoa, equal loving partners I don't ever remember feeling as emotional about two fictional characters as I do about Kip and Fitzroy. Their relationship is just so incredibly written and I'm completely verklempt about them both together. Little things like Kip's stuffed velvet whale being zoomed around the room by Fitzroy has just had me weeping and I don't know why. Possibly because they have such a beautiful relationship with each other and it's so rare to see kind, generous and gentle men being at the centre of stories. They are all the very definition of non-toxic masculinity. As someone who only realised they were ace a few years ago, seeing how Kip wanted a relationship with his special forever person but that relationship didn't include sex has had me sobbing all the way through the last half of the book. The relationship between Kip and Fitzroy is just beautiful and aspirational and means everything to me. I have been married for 25 years and had to explain to my husband that I've learnt something about the nature of my love for him from this book and he held me whilst I cried because he has met me in the middle just like Fitzroy met Kip. At the Feet of the Sun has changed how I view myself and my relationship with my beloved fanoa. It's given me a word for what I am lucky enough to already have.

I love that I was able to get a print copy of what has become my favourite book of the year! The copy is immaculate, the cover and printing is of excellent quality and it was with me within 10 days and was worth waiting for as I much prefer buying direct from the author

What an amazing, incredible book. What a joy and a privilege to read! This book brought me such indescribable joy and I will carry it in my heart for a long long time. First of all, it was incredible to read Kip going on all these adventures and more fully coming into himself. And the queer platonic relationship is so important to me. To have it be so fleshed out and explicit, with people actually talking about their emotions! What a gift, to not have this be romantic or sexual, but so so important to these characters. The most important! There were so many hilarious, impactful, deeply resonant moments in this books. What a gift of a book!

This book was amazing. I want to say it’s practically on another plain of existence from other fantasy stories, but I don’t want to discourage anyone from reading it. It’s beautiful, and entertaining, and never boring. I first read Hands of the Emperor over a year ago. I loved the characters, and although the story was a bit repetitive, it was repetitive in the best way – delivering over and over again exactly the scenes I wanted to read (and that so many authors skip over because they think you’ve read it before). To my own surprise, I absolutely loved that 1000+ page book. This book takes the best parts of Hands of the Emperor and amplifies them, while taking the characters and story in new directions – new directions that I absolutely did not anticipate. I loved it even more than the first book. The world-building is so intense and thorough and real – this is somewhere I want to live. The family and friend relationships are so well explored as well and feel just as real. And Kip and Fitzroy are now two of my favorite characters in all of fiction. Read these books. They’re like a warm hug on a winter night – they’ll just make you feel good.

*This is the sound of me jumping up and down, saying “this is such a good book, this is such a good book, this is such a good book…”* But this sort of thing is not a review, so let me try something else. I was wondering what kind of sequel The Hands of the Emperor might have, and the answer is: “unexpected and immensely satisfying”. A lot of love has gone into this book – for this universe, for humanity, for all the characters; love of stories, epic legends, and small ordinary things that make life worth living. (Also, I love the Islander culture so much, and it was wonderful to see more of it, learn more, and understand more. Can I have an encyclopedia of some kind?) When do you stop when you chase your dreams? Can you stop, should you stop? (Cliopher says no, obviously!) Dreams are always precious, and they can be just for you and for you alone, and neither do they need to be epic. Right? Right. Thank you. This is a book about choices and consequences, understanding who you are, letting go of things, relationships between people, poignant reunions, emotionally wrecking conversations, very funny conversations, characters being so fundamentally themselves that you want to hug them. There are revelations about some of the characters that are nothing short of gorgeous :))) “They should send grown men on quests more often.” Unlike the previous book, there is a lot more magic here (or, as I wrote in my reading notes, “omg, crazy magic stuff is happening!”, he he). Cliopher gets to have adventures! But don’t worry, no dragons/monsters were harmed during the making of this book – these adventures are perfectly Cliopher, they are adventures of the mind, heart, spirit, and soul. Lovely. So, what happens when you finally have your heart’s desire? Yes, exactly, life goes on and it is just as complicated as before, and you still have to untangle your relationships and old hurts… and you can still be happy. “-One thing I have learned over the years, is that people are not islands, but archipelagoes. -Don’t say it like that, Kip, Don’t make it easy. -It is easy, as easy as a poem, and it is hard, hard as living in the world.” I laughed a lot during the last few chapters. The ending is beautiful, with the promise of Book 3 (good, good, good).

5 stars are for my heart's favourites ; not a judgement of literary greatness (even if I can argue most of my favorites definitely are great works of art !). I wish I could get some higher even classification for The Hands of the Emperor and At the Feet of the Sun. Aside of the many literary qualities of its writing (there are essay-worthy material in here, I thought many times), At the Feet of the Sun is very, very special to me. I never had so many, so strong emotions reading a book. Part of that comes from a deep, personal connection to Cliopher and his feeling. I never felt to seen and understood in a book. I have cried, not in empathy but as I would have cried for myself, at sentences I have thought myself and hurt I could feel so real. I witnessed a word break free from over a thousand pages, I witnessed legend and a love that is so deep, so strong, so devoted it can hang stars in the sky and raise islands. A love that can be so easily misunderstood and invisible, and yet was so, so well depicted. So true and real and powerful. I can not say how grateful I am for Victoria to have written this books, they hold the most special place in my heart and I will keep them with me everywhere and every time.

“They should send grown men on quests more often.” Before reading the Hands of the Emperor, I never realised books could just be like that - languid, gentle, slow and spreading but never boring, wholly character-focused and overwhelmingly, exquisitely satisfying. This was all of that but more, more, so much more. It's people well past the 'young man' epiteth having epic adventures with all the power of hindsight and decades (well, centuries) of experiences behind them. It's showing the complicated and messy process of readjusting to new roles and new relationships in life, but giving the characters the space to unpick all the little knots gently and at their own pace. Above all, it's a story that openly and extravagantly celebrates a platonic bond, with all the pomp and care a romantic relationship would receive in any other context. HOTE was my favourite book of this year but this was even better.
